West Ham United attacking coach Teddy Sheringham has left Upton Park to become Stevenage manager - his first managerial job.

The 49-year-old will succeed Graham Westley at the Lamex when his contract expires after Boro were knocked out of the League Two play-offs by Southend United.

Sheringham opened talks with the Hertfordshire side on Wednesday and the former striker's appointment was confirmed on this afternoon.

Speaking to the club website, the former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur forward said: "A lot of people have told me about what a lovely club it is.

"To say that I am excited is an understatement and I am really looking forward to next season.

“The aim is to do better than last season. I know that is a big aim but that should be the aim for the football club, whichever football club you are at.

“The chairman has said to me that I can be my own man and I am very pleased to hear that.”

Sheringham scored 28 league goals in 45 starts for the Hammers during a three-year stint as a player with the club.
