Walthamstow’s Lutalo Muhammad was delighted to come away with Great Britain’s third taekwondo medal at the European Games in Baku on Thursday.
A 16-4 victory over Teodor Georgiev got his day underway before coming unstuck against Milad Beigi Harchegani, 17-5. But the Azerbijani’s semi-final win afforded Muhammad a second chance in the repechage.
And Muhammad seized that opportunity with both hands by beating Damir Fejzic 8-7 and then defeated Italian Roberto Botta to seal bronze.
“The fact that I am here and able to compete with the best in the world is great,” he said. “I really wanted to get a gold medal for everyone that supported me.
“I tried my best under the circumstances and a bronze medal will have to do for today.”
