Les Curtis was the sole golfer to beat the course in a bogey competition at Woodford Golf Club on Saturday.

The Chingford resident came in with a score of plus two to lift the Thompson Challenge Bowl and then find his handicap had been cut from 20 to 19.

Six others just managed to hold their own with level scores. After a count-back, Neil Robinson was judged the runner-up with Ben Cooney third.

Most of the rest of the field found the going tough on a sunny day and were soundly beaten by the course.

Meanwhile, a golfer who was captain when Woodford celebrated its centenary in 1990 has been elected to the board of directors of England Golf, the organisation superintending the game, in the year the club celebrates its 125th anniversary.

John Peters, who took up golf after caddying for a Leytonstone neighbour at Woodford, joined the club as a junior in 1972 and was also captain in 1986.

From 2006-2009, he was president of Woodford and is also a member of Wanstead GC. He served a two-year term from 2013 as president of the Essex Golf Union.

Said Peters: “It is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in the national game at its highest level to help deliver a sound strategy and at the same time recognise the support and encouragement both Woodford and Wanstead golf clubs have given me over many years.”
