Lloyd James admits it is good to have the winning spirit back in Leyton Orient's changing room after a year to forget.

Last season was a dreadful one for the club and even more difficult for James after the midfielder suffered a broken leg, 11 months ago, which ruled him out for most of the campaign.

James had to sit on the sidelines for most of the season while his team-mates toiled on the pitch. Their fate was sealed with relegation on the final day but a promising start to this season has lifted the mood at Brisbane Road.

Speaking after the O’s win at Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday, James said: “It keeps that winning spirit and it’s good to have it back in the changing room. Obviously we’re all delighted because there’s nothing better than that winning feeling.”

The former Southampton youngster added: “We’re confident and played in pre-season and got a couple of good results and we’ve just taken that into the league so long may that continue.

“I just feel there’s a good team spirit and that’s coming from everyone. That’s the main thing we’ve got going at the minute and we’re organised. It’s good and we’re enjoying coming in every day.”

Being out of action for six months was a major setback for the 27-year-old especially after playing such a significant role in the club’s run to the League One play-off final the previous season.

When he eventually came back into contention, James did not feel he was anywhere near his best but believes his form and fitness is back up to where he expects it following a full pre-season.

When asked if he appreciated wins more after his injury woes, James replied: “Definitely. It’s no secret with the injury I had last year and when I came back, I’ll hold my hands up I wasn’t at my best.

“But I was trying to do my best and help the team. But I feel now with a pre-season under my belt I feel like I’m getting there and pretty much there and enjoying myself. It’s an added bonus that we’re winning games as well.

“There were tough times but that’s in the past now. I’m just delighted to be back out there and enjoying my football which I really am. We’ve got a new gaffer, a new regime and everything’s going well at the minute.”

James capped his 100th start for the club with a goal from the penalty spot at Dagenham on Saturday.

The midfielder said: “I didn’t actually realise it was my 100th start but I’m just delighted to be out there after the injury I got last year and feel like I’m slowly getting back to myself.

“With a pre-season under my belt it’s great to be out there and to score is an added bonus.”
