Philip ‘QuickSilver’ Bowes added to his 2016 winning streak after beating James Gorman on points with a unanimous decision from the judges.

The 31-year-old was last defeated in May 2015 where he lost two fights back-to-back against Johnny Coyle by points and Joe Hughes by a knock out in the tenth round and lost his Southern Area Light Welterweight title.

But the Leytonstone boxer said those two defeats allowed him to become better and be the boxer he is today.

He said: “To be honest I did not do the right preparation before these fights and I did not get to the venue at the right time.

“I had to change a lot in my approach after those two fights and I am coming forward a lot more and basically I have become the fighter people wanted me to be, I learnt a lot from it.”

This year the boxer has won three times on a point’s decision and felt he was in control throughout the fight against Gorman.

Gorman has won eight and lost 21 but Bowes said he did not give up without a fight at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.

He said: “In my mind I was always ahead of him, always going forward but after the first punch he was trying to survive for the rest of the fight.

“It is really hard to try and catch them or to get a knock out as they are constantly trying to stay in the fight but I got there in the end.”

There are currently no plans for Bowes to meet his next opponent but he said he is happy to keep fit and prepare for the year ahead.

The 5st11 southpaw also said he wants to carry on giving the fans what they want and to keep winning in the fights he is given.

“I want to get that title shot at the end of the year and that is what my main aim is at the moment,” he said.

“So at the moment I plan to stay focused with that as I definitely want that title shot before the end of the year for sure.”

Bowes (13-2), who is a rare southpaw in the country, said he wants to create his own success away from previous southpaw champions such as Charles Martin.

However he did say there was one southpaw Light Welterweight boxer who he was truly inspired by and looked up to.

“Pernell Whittaker he is my idol, he is someone I have always looked up to,” he said.

“If I can achieve or even get to half of what he has achieved I will be great fighter, he is known by all boxing fanatics.

“They will know all about him as he is great but if you like boxing but are not that crazy about it you might not but he is incredible.”

Bowes will also take part in the Gherkin Challenge on Sunday June 19 for NSPCC where you run up the Gherkin building in the quickest time as possible.

The boxer said the charity is something that is close to his heart and decided to try the challenge once more to beat his original time of seven minutes in 2014.
