Leyton Orient were held to a 0-0 draw against Charlton at the Matchroom Stadium in their first pre-season home game.

Jay Simpson made two great chances in the first half only to see one saved by keeper Dillion Phillips and then blocked by the Charlton defence.

The League One side then came out more dominant in the second half but Callum Harriott and Oliver Muldoon could not covert into the goal.

Dean Cox, who came on at half time, made the shot of the match as his volley just went wide of the right-hand side post as Orient showed promise for the 2016/17 season.

In the fourth minute of the game, Gavin Massey made a great pass to Jordan Bowery who ran through on the right but the angle was against him and he slid his shot wide.

Harriott then had a chance to open the scoring for the away side but his curling shot was high over the bar.

Minutes later Simpson could have made it 1-0 as Sean Clohessy made a great cross into the box on the right hand side but the ball was too high for Simpson and he could not keep his header down.

After some lovely football from Massey and Simpson as they played intricate passes to one another, Massey set up Weir who could only manage to drag his shot wide on the edge of the penalty box.

In the 22nd minute Orient once again showed some brilliant passing before Sandro Semedo had a shot on goal which was held by Phillips.

However, as the Addicks kept pressing Tom Parkes was caught on the ball inside his own half as Brandon Hanlon skipped passed the O’s defence but his shot went wide of the goal.

Parkes quickly redeemed himself in the 27th minute as he made a clearance deep inside the O’s penalty area after Harriott tried to head a Morgan Fox cross back across the goal. Orient kept looking the livelier of the two sides and Massey stung the hands of Phillips from a volley from the edge of the area after Semedo delivered in the cross.

Simpson then saw a shot of his blocked by the Charlton defence on the edge of the penalty box in the 44th minute.

The first half came to a close after Clohessy made another great cross into the box as it dropped to Kelly who controlled the ball with his chest before firing at the Addicks keeper.

The first chance of the second half went to the visitors as Harriott played in Muldoon and his shot went just wide of the left-hand side of the post.

Ales Cisak had to make a fine save in the 55th minute as he dived to the right to push a fierce strike from Harriott behind from a corner which then came to nothing.

There was then a brief stoppage in play as O’s captain Weir received treatment on the pitch before he got back up on his feet.

Charlton’s long ball tactic kept causing Orient problems as Cisak, Parkes and Hanlon all came together before Cisak managed to kick the ball away.

Lee Novak then tried a shot after he turned well in the box in the 75th minute but his shot was easily saved by sub keeper Sam Sargeant.

The hosts then went straight up the other end as they caught a break and Ollie Palmer made a superb curling effort but it went inches wide.

Dean Cox then tried to score another in pre-season with nine minutes remaining as he capitalised on a mix-up from the Charlton defence but his volley went just wide and the score remained 0-0.

The game came to a close as it finished goalless but O’s boss Andy Hessenthaler will be impressed with their performance.
