Leyton Orient lost 1-0 against Newport County in their first home game of the 2016/17 League Two season.

A goal from Jamie Turley in the first half was enough to seal the visitors a win after Orient looked the more likely to score in the first ten minutes.

Changes by O’s boss Andy Hessenthaler for Nigel Atangana and Harry Cornick brought some life to the game but they failed to gain the equaliser.

Hessenthaler will have to look to see which players he starts on Tuesday, August 16 against Stevenage as Orient look for their first win of the season.

In the first opening minutes of the game Sean Clohessy delivered a brilliant ball into the box but it was too high for O’s striker Ollie Paler and the Newport defence managed to clear.

Seconds later, Dean Cox played in Gavin Massey who got a great chance across the goal but once again the Newport defence were equal to their effort.

However, the away side did not give into Orient’s dominance in the midfield and as Sandro Semedo tried to clear a long ball, Newport’s Sean Rigg catches the ball off him and his effort goes wide.

Rigg once again had a chance to open the scoring as Yvan Erichot blocked a Jennison Myrie-Williams cross at the near post but Orient failed to clear and Rigg hit his shot over the bar. In the 11th minute Massey got the better of two Newport men and crossed into Palmer who took a touch before his shot was saved by Joe Day.

The game soon became chance after chance for both sides as Myrie-Williams crossed in another dangerous ball before Marlon Jackson put the ball just wide before he was penalised for handball.

County then had the best chance in the first 20 minutes as Jordan Green got on the end of a free-kick clearance by Alex Cisak but skied his shot over the bar.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 34th minute as Turley turned the ball in at the back post after the O’s defence made a mess of clearing the corner which was given away by a misjudgement from Erichot.

Orient won a free-kick two minutes from the break as Paul McCallum was bundled over, Cox took the chance but it struck the wall before Newport cleared once again.

With no changes at the beginning of the second half, it was the O’s who quickly pressed for an equaliser as Cox’s corner was headed forward by Weir and Kelly controlled the ball before Dan Bulter brought him down in the box but no penalty was given.

A minute later, Erichot’s ball forward is controlled by Palmer as he tried to shot but Darren Jones made a good block.

Again it was Orient who had another goal scoring opportunity denied as Palmer outmuscled a Newport defender and set up Kelly but Turley made a sensational block before Mccallum fouled Day.

But a mistake from Kelly allowed Rigg to capitalise but the Orient defence recovered well before Jackson blazed over.

As Atangana replaced captain Weir Orient made an instant impact as the Frenchmen threads a ball through for Massey before getting the ball back and having a shot deflected behind.

Clohessy then shows some style as he passed a lovely ball to feed Harry Cornick before Day saves, Newport quickly made a break but Jackson came inside and curled over.

Jordan Bowery then won the cross in by Cornick as Kelly nearly flicked it on into the net before Day saved and Palmer followed up and headed over.

Newport’s chances diminished in the second half as once again Orient failed to get on the scoreboard after Semedo burst forward and curled a cross towards the far post but Palmer could only direct his header wide of the post.

Three minutes from time there was another great opportunity for the home side as Kelly picked out the run of Cornick who controlled the ball well before his shot was deflected by the Newport defence.

Orient however could not find the equaliser and received their first home defeat of the season.
