Wapping Hockey Club members all huddled round at Heathrow to welcome home the Team GB women’s hockey team yesterday morning.
The team’s exciting gold medal against the Netherlands on Friday, August 19 was watched by members of the club and they could not wait to greet them as they landed on the tarmac.
Since the final the club has saw a doubling in new joiners at its annual club day which celebrated the start of the new season and the new members discovered the buzzing east London club.
The ladies beat the Dutch on a shootout after the game ended 2-2 as Wapping Goalkeeping Academy Maddie Hinch became the hero of the hour with her shot stopping performance.
Wapping HC chairman Stuart Burnside said: “At Wapping, we focus on removing barriers to access and provide an environment that works whatever your gender, income, background, ability or disability.
“For this reason, demand has been strong for some time, with the club already near doubling in size since the 2012 Olympics, and we now have 19 senior league sides, making us one of the largest team sports clubs in east London.
“We have everyone from total beginners to internationals under one roof, I can think of few sports that offer this.”
