Leytonstone super-lightweight Philip Bowes reckons he’s on the brink of a something big as he fights for a British challenge belt next week.

The event will take place at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday, October 1 and the boxer, who is nicknamed Quicksilver, said it’s crucial he keeps winning.

The 5ft 11in southpaw has had a great start to 2016 as he remains unbeaten after losing back-to-back matches for the Southern Area title.

He said: “I believe I’m only one win away from being in contention for another big fight.

“I’m there or thereabouts at the moment and that’s why I’m in the gym all the time, because in this game you never know when the call is coming.

“I don’t want to take a fight at short notice when I’m not ready, lose and then go back on the shelf.”

After securing a win on points with a unanimous decision over James Gorman back in June, the 32-year-old admitted he wanted to create his own success away from previous champions such as Charles Martin.

But Bowes also believes he’s been written off within the trade following losses to Joe Hughes and Johnny Coyle.

“People soon forget about you when you lose a fight or two. They just want to forget about you and bring the next guy through,” said Bowes.

“But I’ve been around for years and just because I haven’t had lots of exposure, that doesn’t mean I can’t fight.

“I’m one of those guys who’s been under rated and overlooked throughout my whole career.

“I didn’t get any recognition for beating a former British champion (Paul Appleby) in just my seventh fight and time and time again, people have been pushed through in front of me.

“I’m knocking on the door again now and if I have to, I will kick it down.

“I want to get my hands on some silverware and then I can start talking up rematches with the guys who beat me. They are the fights I really want.”
