Pedro Obiang believes West Ham United must look to build momentum after recording only their second Premier League win of the season against Crystal Palace.

The 24-year-old was part of an impressive back three at Selhurst Park on Saturday as United kept Palace at arm’s length for much of the match.

Bottom of the table Sunderland visit the London Stadium on Saturday and Obiang says it is important the Hammers show similar quality at home.

“It is very important that we start winning at London Stadium. We know that Sunderland will be a difficult game,” he told the club’s website.

“But we need to carry on this good performance into the game on Saturday and if we show this kind of character we can win more games.

“We have to keep this mentality. We need to do something different this season. We all know the start of the season has not been what we are looking for.

“But we have changed things around and all the players came together at the right time to get a result.”

Saturday’s change of formation brought the best out of West Ham in an attacking sense as wing-backs Aaron Cresswell and Michail Antonio were given license to get forward.

The club have used the 3-5-2 system under Slaven Bilic’s management before and Obiang believes their flexibility shows the quality the Croatian boss has at his disposal.

He said: “We played that system a few times last season against Tottenham and Everton and we showed that we are a good team.

“We can play different systems and all the players can show their qualities playing in different positions.”
