EDIMILSON Fernandes says he is prepared to play out of position after making his full Premier League debut for West Ham United in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Sunderland.

Aaron Cresswell’s red card in the previous weekend’s win against Crystal Palace meant the 20-year-old was asked to fill in at left wing-back at London Stadium.

Despite usually operating as a central midfielder, Fernandes impressed and says he will play wherever manager Slaven Bilic needs him.

“I train very hard and want to play every game. My preferred position is central midfield but I will play in any position,” he told the club website.

“I felt a bit of pressure going into the match but thought I had a good game playing my first game in the Premier League.

“I don’t normally get nervous before games as I have quite a lot of experience, but I felt the pressure this time because I was playing a different position. However, I was just happy to play.”

Having been used sparingly by Bilic this season, the former Swansea and FC Sion man may have to settle for a return to the bench.

He believes he is making progress, however, and is looking to learn from the experience he has gained so far.

He said: “I feel very confident when I play and work hard in training. The management train me hard and explained to me what they want from me playing in this position, so I felt confident.

“I try and take that confidence onto the pitch.”

Saturday’s win was only West Ham’s second in the league at home this season and came in the nick of time to alleviate a souring mood inside a rapidly emptying ground.

While the stadium move has been far from straightforward, Fernandes says he relished playing in front of the large crowd.

He said: “It is a brilliant stadium and to play in front of 57,000 fans who push you forward is an unbelievable feeling and I hope to play a big part in the future.”
