Wapping Hockey Club men’s first team player Ben Bull was their only ray of light in their 2-1 home defeat to Oxted in the National League.

The team had the majority of possession but could not capitalise on their opportunities in the final third.

Halfway through the first half there was a miscommunication in the Wapping midfield which allowed Oxted to mount a rare counter attack to open the scoring.

And the away side proved extremely hard to break down before a moment of quality from Bull.

The youngster had started the move after turning his player on the edge of the D before playing a one-two with Nat Crawley as he fired in from close range.

With the score tied at 1-1 it looked as though Wapping were the ones who would emerge as victors.

But it was not to be as with three minutes to go disaster struck after a defensive error.

Oxted were handed a second break-away opportunity which they again finished clinically.

Wapping searched for the reply but it was to no avail.

But there was better news for the men’s seconds as they bounced back from their first league defeat in 10 games as they beat City of Peterborough’s thirds 3-1 to go top of East Division One.

The home side took an early lead when forward Michael Bolle waltzed through Borough’s defence and hit a strike through the keeper’s legs.

And although they were dominant in possession, they failed to convert their penalty corners.

But Jack Beard was on hand and flicked one into the inside of the right of post leaving the keeper stranded and Wapping 2-0 up.

After the break the same pattern followed as their third goal came from Sam Philpott who scrambled the ball into the back of the net following good teamwork from Dominic Oliver and James Fanger.

Philpott’s happiness was short-lived as he was was yellow carded for breaking down a CoP getaway with a harsh tackle.

Peterborough managed to grab a consolation goal as they struck at the near post after a rebound from a penalty corner.

The boys in maroon are back on the road next week as they travel to Norwich City.

Old Loughtonians men had a comfortable victory last weekend as they saw off Ipswich Hockey Club men’s firsts 4-1.

The game started evenly from the two sides but the deadlock was eventually broken halfway through the first half.

Tom Stumbke found Will Hopkins who deflected the ball home just before the Ipswich keeper saved a Loughts penalty flick to keep the score at 1-0 at the break.

But when the second half got underway Old Loughtonians once again dominated with wave after wave of attacks.

The goals eventually came through Shane Martin and Roy Coltham as they added themselves to the scoresheet.

Ipswich grabbed a goal back but the comeback did not come to fruition as Loughts added a fourth to kill the game off.

Croystx men’s firsts made it four games without defeat after they beat Wapping’s fourths 4-1 before taking on Brentwood this weekend.

The team established an early lead when Dan Willoughby crossed to the back post for Callum Palmer to deflect home.

But Wapping quickly found themselves back into the game as they beat keeper Ian Baldwin to equalise.

But Croystx quickly resumed their lead when James Buckingham converted a short corner before Palmer set up Andy Gibbon for the third.

Wapping tried to build up the counter attacks in the second half but not long after Rob Harrison found Jake Burke from a long corner and the latter scored with a delicate first-time finish.

Waltham Forest ladies travelled to Blackheath and emerged as 2-1 victors.

Blackheath were the better side in the first half but the score remained tied at 0-0 at half-time.

Heath quickly went 1-0 up in the second from a short corner but Forest did not give up.

The visitors stepped up and won a short corner which was put away by Anne-Marie Parker.

Shortly after Forest followed up with another successful short corner strike which was scored by Lucy Butcher as they secured the victory.
