Slaven Bilic has hailed West Ham United’s 2-1 EFL Cup round four victory over Chelsea at London Stadium was a great night for the club.

Goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Edimilson Fernandes were enough for the Hammers as Gary Cahill responded at the death for Chelsea.

While crowd trouble marred the win somewhat, Bilic instead chose to focus on an impressive display in the first ever London derby at West Ham’s new ground.

“It is a great night for us. It was a great game of football, not only for us. It was a cup game, a night game in a packed stadium in a London derby against a team that are totally on fire,” he explained.

“To get that kind of performance is very important for us, not only for this competition but in general to gain more confidence.

“To beat Chelsea you have to be on top of your game, which we were in the first half and I think we deserved to be even further ahead in the first half.”

The Croatian’s appraisal of his side was fair and West Ham looked sharp from the moment Kouyate headed them into an 11th minute lead.

They doubled their advantage shortly after half-time and Bilic felt making their dominance count played a vital role in the result.

He said: “The crucial period of the game was the start of the second half. When we scored the second goal it lifted us and then we defended as a unit.

“We were also very good in transition when we got the ball and also when we needed to rest with the ball. It was a really great execution of the plan by the players.”

Bilic will now take his side to Old Trafford for the quarter-final of the EFL Cup in the week of Tuesday, November 29.

He admitted it will be a tough task to beat Jose Mourinho’s side, who booked their place in the last eight by beating Manchester City, but is looking forward to the draw.

“Man United away, it is not good. Since I am here it has been tough draws. Last Year in the Carling Cup it was Leicester away and then in the quarter-final of the FA Cup Man United away,” he said.

“But it is going to be a good game in a great stadium.”
