Eton Manor defeated Sudbury 15-8 in an away trip in London One North on Saturday.

Manor made their traditional slow start by conceding two scrums close to their own 22 and from the second they were penalised, giving Sudbury an easy early score of 3-0 from the penalty.

Eton soon struck back though, when Rory Moore stole the ball from a Sudbury lineout and moved it along the line to Max Murray who shipped the ball to Chris Smith, who was making his first-team debut, and he dived over for the try.

Callum McKie was unsuccessful with the conversion but the visitors took the lead with the score at 5-3 after eight minutes.

Sudbury showed why they should not be bottom when, shortly after the restart, the Manor’s clearance kick fell to their number 8.

He set off on a run that saw him skip past ineffectual tackles into the Manor 22 and worked the ball out wide to their left wing, who dived in at the corner.

Although the conversion was missed, Sudbury had retaken the lead ten minutes in.

Jack Sullivan won Eton a penalty just before the break and McKie put the kick over for his side to end the half level on points with their opponents.

Sudbury started the brighter of the two sides in the second half when their fly-half made a good break from the 10-metre line before Freddie Newbury had to put in a clearance kick to relieve the danger.

Before long, Manor took the lead. Luigi Martelletti did well to take the ball over the line and with Smith now on kicking duties, he added the extra points.

Chances continued for both sides but the game became more scrappy and the score remained the same until the final whistle.

The win takes Eton up to fourth with the same number of points as North Walsham, who sit in fifth.

Manor welcome Chelmsford to the New Wilderness this weekend after they fell to a 106-0 defeat at the hands of Brentwood.
