West Ham United crashed out of the FA Cup as a dominant Manchester City cruised to a 5-0 win in the third round at London Stadium.

Yaya Toure opened the scoring from the spot in the 33rd minute before a Havard Nordtveit own-goal and David Silva strike made it 3-0 at the break.

Sergio Agueroadded a fourth with a clever flicked finish just after the restart and John Stones completed the rout with a towering late header.

United will look to lift themselves in time for the visit of Crystal Palace in the Premier League next Saturday.

Slaven Bilic has made no secret of his desire to take the Hammers on an extended run in a competition they have won on three previous occasions.

His team selection belied this sentiment to a certain extent, however, as the Hammers boss opted to drop Dimitri Payet to the bench.

The Frenchman was introduced with the score at 4-0 but there was little he could do to influence matters by that stage.

It was the visitors who started the brighter, forcing Winston Reid into a brave block in the seventh minute after Pablo Zabaleta got on the end of Silva’s square pass.

Adrian was called into even more urgent action five minutes later as Gael Clichy’s pass found Silva in space inside the box and the Spaniard’s shot was smartly saved by his compatriot.

West Ham grew into the game from this point and Willy Caballero had to react well to save Michail Antonio’s deflected drive from the edge of the box moments later.

Winston Reid has been the Hammers’ standout defender this season and tightened his grip on that mantle to prevent Raheem Sterling from opening the scoring.

After a Silva’s through ball released the England international, he cut inside Nordtveit and set himself to place a left footed effort from 10 yards.

Reid had other ideas though and timed a superb sliding challenge to take the ball away from Sterling at the crucial moment.

His fine work would be undone just after the half hour when Angelo Ogbonna clipped the heels of Zabaleta to allow Toure to convert low to Adrian’s right from the penalty spot.

West Ham’s reaction was as instant as it was impressive with Michail Antonio driving into the box and forcing a fine low stop from Caballero.

The loose ball broke invitingly for Sofiane Feghouli inside the six yard box, but the Algerian could only fire across goal under pressure from Clichy.

The game was effectively ended in a two minute spell at the end of the half. Firstly, a sweeping attack down the right resulted in Nordtveit turning Bacaray Sagna’s cross into his own net under pressure from Sterling.

Sterling then laid on the third for Silva, collecting Sergio Aguero’s clever dinked pass and rolling invitingly across the six yard box for the unmarked Silva.

The diminutive midfielder calmly controlled the pass to send Adrian to turf and rolled into the net to give City a 3-0 lead at the break.

Any hopes of a miraculous comeback were ended with just five minutes of the second half played as Aguero added his name to the scoresheet in delicate fashion.

The Argentine applied a deft flick with the outside of his right foot to flick Toure’s shot over the already committed Adrian from close range.

From that point on City controlled possession – an aspect of the game Pep Guardiola’s sides tend to be particularly fluent in – and the Hammers mustered little in response.

Indeed, City themselves seemed content with their four goal lead but made it five with five minutes to play.

A corner from the left was powerfully met by Stones and his header just crossed the line before Mark Noble could clear to complete West Ham’s misery.
