Old Loughtonian men’s Firsts saw off Ipswich 5-2 in the East Premier Division on Saturday.

Both sides had good chances to open the scoring with the ball being moved quickly and efficiently.

But it was Loughts who drew first blood when a Shane Martin short corner rocketed into the goal. And the lead was soon doubled by new signing Luca Grossman.

Ipswich managed to pull two goals back after the break, but any hope of a comeback was ended by their opponents who scored a further three times.

It was also a good day for the ladies Firsts who defeated Norwich City 2-1.

Loughts started the game well and quickly gained the first short corner but failed to convert it.

But shortly afterwards Loughts were on the counter attack and after a slick pass from Daffodil Dhayaa, Alice Melvin popped the ball over the keeper to score, only for Norwich to get back on terms before the break.

Loughts maintained their intensity in attack in the second half but also had to stay strong in defence.

With only five minutes to go, the visitors flew forward again and grabbed another goal to seal the victory.

It was a mixed weekend of results for Wapping’s ladies Firsts team, who lost 3-2 to Cambridge University after defeating Bromley & Beckenham 4-2 on Saturday as their battle for promotion continued.

Cambridge opened the scoring just 30 seconds into Sunday’s game after turning the ball over following a Wapping pushback.

The home side however, regained their composure and Katelynn Roganowicz levelled the score as she drove into the circle from open play.

During the second period, Wapping improved on their delivery to pass the ball quickly but Cambridge maintained the pressure and scored a second.

The hosts then won a string of penalty corners but were unable to convert and this allowed the visitors to score their third from a deflection.

Wapping never gave in and in the final seconds of the game they scored a goal but a bad foul resulted in the umpire awarding a penalty flick.

Aisling McKeon stepped up and scored a clinical finish to make the final result 3-2.

On Saturday, Lucy Todd scored two and Roganowicz and Lotta Paulus were both also on the scoresheet in their win over Bromley.

Wapping men’s Firsts resumed their National League campaign on Saturday against top side Southgate and lost 3-0.

First-team coach Ryan D’Souza said afterwards: “Southgate are a quality side and deserved winners today.

“I thought we played extremely well, ultimately undone by the quality of the opposition.”

“I was particularly pleased with defensive performance led by James Stock and Will Cairns.

“It was also good to see top performance from the midfield three, with Rory Preston, Rob Pryce, Phil Messent, Nat Crawley and Tatai Dewes all playing well.

He added: “We are yet to see the best of our forwards, but there have been some recent promising performances. We continue to relish the challenge of staying in this division.”
