Leyton Orient were relegated out of the Football League for the first time in 112-years after a 3-0 defeat at Crewe Alexandra.

Callum Ainley, Ryan Wintle and George Cooper all penned their name on the scoresheet and sent the three points their side’s way.

It was always going to be a tough ask for the young Orient side and they were put under pressure from the get-go.

Omer Riza’s side have two games left in League Two as they take on Colchester United before facing Blackpool in their final league game.

The hosts gained the first chance of the game in after some early pressure but Oliver Turton could only flash his shot across the goal.

Callum Cooke sent in a dangerous cross into the area in the 11th minute but Sam Sargeant was equal to the effort and punched clear.

George Cooper had a chance to break the deadlock six minutes later as he took a shot on the edge of the area but Sargeant made a comfortable save.

Chris Dagnall was a thorn in Orient’s side and controlled a cross from Cooke before being denied by a last-ditch attempt from Tom Parkes.

Orient’s Teddy Mezague caused his own keeper some problems when he tried a back pass, which looked more like a shot, which Sargeant had to chest down and clear.

The Railwaymen looked more and more likely to find the back of the net first but Cooper could only fire wide from close range off of a Zoumana Bakayogo cross.

Ainley broke the deadlock just before the half an hour mark when he back-heeled the ball into the corner of the net from a Cooke cross.

Orient’s day went from bad to worse as Wintle’s header was deemed to have crossed the line despite Teddy Mezague clearing the ball from danger.

Crewe almost got a third as Sargeant parried a Dagnall strike after Parkes had slid in to deny Perry Ng.

Bakayogo then bombed forward in the 40th minute and laid off for Ainley but he fired over from 20-yards.

Cooper packed on the misery as he made it three on the stroke of half-time when he drilled the ball home from the edge of the box.

Orient made a double substitution at half-time as Paul McCallum and Josh Koroma came on for Michael Collins and Mezague.

The home side looked to make it four in the 51st minute when Cooke brought down a ball over the top of the defence but Dagnall was unable to get on the end of it.

With half an hour left to go, ex O’s man Dagnall should have made it four after being given too much time on the ball but he shot straight at Sargeant.

There was a tussle in the second half between Koroma and Bakayogo with the latter being booked for the off-the-ball incident.

Tristan Abrahams tried to give the 407 travelling away fans something from the game but his shot was high and wide.

Sargeant once again sprang into action when he kept Cooke’s shot out by pushing the ball over the bar for a corner.

Steven Alzate tried his luck from 30-yeards out but Ben Garratt saved with ease in what was Orient’s first shot on target.

A minute later, the referee blew full-time and with that, it ended the east London club’s 112-year stay in the Football League.
