Philip ‘Quicksilver’ Bowes says he will be a “matador” to win the English super-lightweight championship later this month.

The vacant St George’s belt is on the line when the Leytonstone southpaw squares up to Glenn Foot on promoter Mickey Helliet’s show at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday, May 27.

Bowes gets his shot after putting together six straight wins, including a career-best points victory over unbeaten Nathan Dale in his last fight.

Foot claimed a career highlight with a win in his last fight, against Adam Little.

The 29-year-old from Sunderland is also a former ‘Prizefighter’ winner.

“I know what he is going to do,” said Bowes. “I’ve been watching him on YouTube and I know he is going to come forward like a bull – and I’m going to be a matador.

“I’m going to control the fight, control the pace.

“He knows he can’t outbox me and he’s going to try to rush me, rough me up.

“But this isn’t the same Philip Bowes who lost to Joe Hughes (in a previous bid for the English title) and Johnny Coyle.

“Fighting on the inside and the rough stuff let me down then, but I can do that now.

“We’ve been working on that in my last few fights and in the gym.

“I spar a lot of good guys in the gym who come forward and put it on me. I’m ready this time.”

And Bowes knows that winning the St George’s belt could be a stepping stone to move onto things that are going to be bigger and better for him.

“This is where I wanted to be and now I’m here, it’s make or break,” he said.

“I don’t want to be rebuilding my career again.

“Win this and I’m looking to move on to fight for British and Commonwealth titles.

“I know I have to up my game.”
