Q. My son is allergic to dust mites and I’ve been told that a silk duvet might be the answer. Is this right? If so, where can I find one?

A. Silk-filled duvets are naturally hypo-allergenic and resistant to dust mites, and also repel mould and mildew. They also seem to be very suitable for a British climate as the temperature-regulating properties of silk mean that they keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. We have several companies on our website for you to contact: www.thecosycompany.com (who also do baby sleeping bags); www.mandarina.co.uk (who can make them in any size or weight); www.gingerlily.co.uk and What’s more, the Chinese believe that the amino acids in silk emit small particles called sleep factors, which are supposed to ease the nervous system, help you sleep better and improve your sense of well being!

Q. I'm trying to find a chrome 'no junk mail' sign for my door.  Do you know where I can find one? My internet search has proved fruitless.

A. Architectural Components offer one in polished stainless steel which goes well with their polished chrome letterplates. It’s on their website www.doorhandles.co.uk under Signs and is a reasonable £19.50 plus VAT. They have explained to me that it’s really not worth the expense of having a brass one specially chrome-plated, although they could do it if you are desperate!

Q.I am looking for a floor paint that gives me that French ‘washed’ look, so that you see the texture of the wood through the paint. I don’t want something too solid-looking. I was thinking of using some kind of white paint that doesn't cover the grains of the old wood completely (the floor has been sanded). Could you please advise the best way to achieve this?

A. Check out the huge range of metallic fabrics at B.Brown. This company has been supplying display fabrics since 1934. Their ranges includes lots of fabrics which simulate brushed steel, aluminium and corrugated metal. Look them up via www.b.brown.co.uk. You could also try Ray Munn (www.raymunn.com) which imports the Swedish Beckers range of 'Decor Metall' paint. Finally, Architectural Textiles supplies authentic Japanese gold, silver and copper leaf wallcoverings in 22 shimmering colours (www.architecturaltextiles.co.uk)

This invaluable online directory features a large database of more than 3,500 companies covering all aspects of interior and garden design and decoration. It’s the essential resource both for professionals and for the general public.
