Eating Out
Cumin’s - Walthamstow

| Cumin's |
WALTHAMSTOW is not exactly lacking in Indian restaurants, so it is slightly surprising to see yet another one open up in recent weeks.
Cumin's certainly faces some tough competition - so can it hold its own against the high quality establishments already operating along E17's busy streets?
Entering Cumin's on a cold Friday night, the attractive décor and comfortable seating was a nice warm welcoming experience, as were the tasty freshly made poppadoms.
First up, to sample as wide a range as possible, I plumped for the mixed grill (£11.99). Made up of a generous helping of tandoori chicken, pork chops, lamb kebabs and fish, it certainly packed a punch.
The fish was absolutely melt-in-your mouth delicious and the chops very nice, but unfortunately the rest didn't quite live up to this standard.
The tandoori chicken was of pretty average fare, and much of the meat spread was quite chewy - my partner's Chicken 65' (£5.25) was also rather similar in this regard.
Next, once our mains had arrived it was a bit strange that the cutlery provided with our starters was not replaced.
While it was not exactly a great hardship using the serving spoons provided with the main dishes, it did show a lack of awareness on the waiter's part.
Nevertheless the service on the night was generally good - friendly despite being rather less than rapid.
For my main, I was served up a rather tough Lamb Rogan Josh (£5.99) coated in a startlingly sweet sauce.
Nevertheless, it was still of a reasonable standard, although I didn't exactly collapse on the floor in a state of food ecstasy.
My partner enjoyed her vegetarian Aloo Baigan (£3.25), even if the portion was a little on the small side.
The desserts, however, were of a very high quality, and appeared to be made on the premises, a rarity in many Indian restaurants.
The Gulab Jamoon (£1.99) had a warming sweetness to it, and the cooling Mango Kulfi (£1.99) helped smooth any lingering spiciness.
Overall it may not be top of the league, but Cumin's still manages to hold its own well in certain areas.
Any new restaurant takes time to find its feet, and if a few rough edges can be ironed out this will be a more than welcome addition to Walthamstow's many spicy eateries.
