Pop up events are fast becoming an innovative way for restaurants across London to branch out into different boroughs and discover new customers who are hungry for a new taste.
I was invited to one of Just Eat’s pop up food festivals at Red Market, in Shoreditch, on July 21, as there would be an array of delicious Caribbean, Italian, American, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisines for my guest and I to try.
The aim of the evening was for people to taste three dishes and if they enjoyed the taste and wanted to order from those restaurants again in the future, they could do so via the Just Eat app.
As we walked from Old Street Underground Station it was easy to spot the warehouse venue. At the entrance, we were greeted by a photographer who seemed to be waiting for a special guest, who later turned out to be Nicole Scherzinger.
Inside, the event was actually in an open space and the pop up stalls were dotted around benches for people to sit and eat in a relaxed setting rather than feeling like they're in the middle of the city.
We tried the Caribbean stall first, where the food was cooked by chefs at Panda Berry, a restaurant in Finchley. We piled our plates high with tender jerk chicken and creamy curried goat, as well as spicy rice and beans.
We next tried some authentic Italian pizza from Sapore Vero, based in Beckenham. The Parma ham on the crusts was salty but the chunks of pineapple on top added a sweet balancing note.
Not wanting to give up after only two dishes, we saved room for dessert and tried an extremely sweet ice-cream in a donut cone from Dum Dum Donutterie, a restaurant in Brick Lane, Shoreditch.
