Artist AyJay Trashy is returning to the gallery at the Dugdale with a second exhibition of his extraordinary miniature works called The Incredible Shrinking Man, after debuting his first solo exhibition called Sugar Trashy two years ago.

"It's going to be fabulous. Gigantic and quite small and tiny." the artist says of his new show on Facebook.

AyJay (real name Alex Tracy) is from Tufnell Park and is also colour blind, which leads him to use bright, bold colours in his work. He paints on found objects and things that will be discarded and uses as many images in the piece as possible to create a busy and bright effect.

AyJay is self-taught and is part of a collective of naïve art makers with little or no contact within the mainstream art world or institutions, whose outpourings often illustrate extreme mental states, unconventional ideas or elaborate fantasy worlds.

When he first started out, AyJay painted on the napkins and on sugar wrappers and tea bag tags. Then he widened his scope to create miniature scenarios on other found and used objects. He mainly relies on his photographic memory and uses things he sees in the outside world as a basis to incorporate ideas.

AyJay’s passion was first developed while he was growing up in north London. His Aunt Jose used to look after him, and gave him various art projects from the age of three. He was also looked after by his grandma, who used to take him around Camden, Kentish Town and up the Archway. A lot of what he saw in those early days still inspires his work to this day.

AyJay's work is also on display at the Book Art Book shop in Hoxton in East End where visitors can also find copies of his book.

Curator Sonoko Obuchi, who is also the set designer for Millfield Theatre’s pantomime each year, says: “Over the past two years AyJay has been striving to create work that is ever smaller and finer.

"The finer his art becomes, the longer it takes to produce and the larger the work looms in his imagination. It is almost like a meditation with paint, with many characters that appear again and again in the works including Mickey and Marilyn”.
