Paul Beatty in discussion

Come along for an evening with the 2016 Man Booker prize winner Paul Beatty. Beatty became the first American author to win the award with The Sellout, a caustic satire on US racial politics. It was a unanimous decision by the judges, who praised the book’s ‘savage wit’ and called it a ‘novel for our times’.

The novel’s protagonist, a young African American brought up on the outskirts of Los Angeles by a single father, is only known to the reader by his last name, Me. When his father is accidentally shot dead in a shootout, Me initiates the most outrageous action conceivable by attempting to reinstate slavery and segregate the local high school, a course of action that ultimately lands him in the Supreme Court.

Benighted

The ultimate creepy Christmas treat. Lost in the heart of wildest Wales on a treacherously stormy night, a group of travellers are left with no choice but to abandon their car and seek refuge in a ramshackle mansion. Soaked, hungry and exhausted from their ordeal, their relief at finally being indoors rapidly slips away as it becomes apparent that their gracious hosts for the evening, the peculiar Femm Family (and indeed the house itself), may be far more treacherous than the raging elements they have fled. A spine-chilling comedy that inspired The Rocky Horror Show and countless lesser imitators, Benighted is the original haunted house psychodrama brought to the stage for the very first time.
