An artist and fine art printmaker who loves sketching in nature is exhibiting her work from today.

Kirsten Schmidt, from Walthamstow, says: “For the last year I’ve been drawing and painting in the many green spaces around us in Waltham Forest especially Lloyd Park and the Wetlands. I’ve produced etchings, linocuts and paintings.”

Kirsten believes that drawing in situ rather than from photos produces a unique quality in her work. The result are a number of linocuts and etchings of Herons, Swans, Kingfishers and other birds in their natural habitat which will be displayed at the E17 Art House.

She adds: “Birds are beautiful creatures and I love drawing their curvy forms, their feathers remind me of leaves.

Being a print maker and living near the William Morris Gallery, Kirsten also shows her love for Morris’ designs by incorporating thistles, peonies, willows and other plants the designer was inspired by.”

She explains: “The William Morris Garden nearby is a constant source of visual material for my prints and the vibrant colours in the summer made me get out my pastel box to try and capture them.

“I loves exploring different techniques and the exhibition shows etchings from pencil drawings, linocuts with hand colouring and metal leaf details as well as pastel and oil.”

E17, Art House, 54-56 How Street, Walthamstow, E17 4PG, from Thursday, June 28.
