A teenage singer and songwriter from Enfield has proved she is one of the best young performers in London.

Natalie Shay from Arnos Grove took to the stage in the final of the Gigs Big Busk on Sunday and was crowned winner in the Youth category which saw six 11-to-15 years olds battle it out.

The 15-year-old, who was straight back to the BRIT School on Monday says: “I feel really lucky. I wasn’t expecting to win.”

The competition is the UK’s biggest street music competition and Natalie was one of 500 entries and one of 200 acts selected to perform live at 24 busy London locations during the summer.

“It’s great fun gigging around London and I’ll definitely be entering again next year,” says the teenager, who wowed judges at Sunday’s final in Westfield Stratford City with her self-penned song Peace of Mind.

“It’s about a relationship that goes a bit wrong,” says the former pupil of Grange Park Preparatory School and Ashmole Academy. “I have been writing songs since I was about 11 and gigging since I was 13 all over the UK.

“My dad is very supportive and sets everything up so it fits in with school.”

Natalie, who admires fellow BRIT alumni Kate Nash, won music equipment and the chance to receive mentoring and advice from industry professionals at a series of workshops later this year.

She already won the youth category of the competition in 2012 and earlier this year was named Best Undiscovered Talent at the inaugural London Music Awards.

Her début single Follow You Home also reached number 15 in the singer/songwriter iTunes charts in April and she is now working on another release, due out next April.

“Obviously I would like to get signed, but not yet because I’m still at school and think I’m doing OK as an independent artist.”
