Celebrate world music

Music transcends all language barriers and this weekend is the beginning of a 12-day, free admission, festival featuring creative and performing artists from national and faith communities that make up London’s vibrant cosmopolitan population.

World City Music Village Festival has been running for 24 years. This year more than 60 performers are appearing, including three Haringey-based artists.

Boujemma Baboul is a master musician of the Gnawa trance healing tradition and hails from the ancient southern Moroccan town of Taroudant.

Mauricio Velasierra was born in Columbia and has been living in Manor Park for more than 15 years; he is a multi-instrumentalist performing Afro-Andean music on south American instruments.

And dancer Anusha Subramanyam will be telling a story with Indian classical dance company Beeja.

Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets hosts the music village this weekend.
