The “supreme example of historic woodland”, is how Epping Forest is lovingly described in a stunning new book paying homage to the great diversity and beauty of Britain’s woods.
Featuring images and words by tree photographer Archie Miles, A Walk In The Woods: Exploring Britain’s Greatest Woodland offers an illustrated tour of 46 of our great open spaces, from beech woods, oak woods and pine woods to ancient forests, coastal woodland, ravine woodland and the very best arboreta.
Epping Forest, which at almost 5,700 acres is the capital’s largest open space, is included in the Where Town Meets County section, under the heading “Loved by Londoners, saved for the nation, the ultimate urban-fringe woodland”. In the chapter, Miles offers a comprehensive study of the history of the forest, as well as further discussion on the bio-diversity of the space, inviting the reader to dive into his crisp autumnal images. It’s enough to make you reach for your walking boots!
A Walk In The Woods: Exploring Britain’s Greatest Woodland by Archie Miles is published in hardback by Frances Lincoln Limited Publishers on Thursday, October 22, priced £25.
