This week sees the start of London Word Festival, a celebration of words, text and language that runs throughout March.
It will feature stand-up, shadow puppetry, micro-lectures, and performance poetry from an array of artists working with words.
It begins on Sunday with The Chip Shop, at Toynbee Studio Arts, on Commercial Street. Choose a word to have printed on a block of wood, then take it home wrapped in newspaper.
One thing, done once each day, for one hundred days, is the simple premise behind Josie Long’s mission to make everyone a little friendlier, stronger, fitter, wiser or jollier. See what she has encouraged a group of comedians, writers and musicians to come up with on Wednesday, March 10, at a secret east London venue. To find out where, go to the London Word Festival website.
On Thursday, March 11, at St Leonard’s Church, Shoreditch, Robin Ince will explore the cosmos, helped by Helen Keen’s stand-up science class and Professor Brian Cox.
Avant! Noir, is a night of criminal fiction, comic art and music of a darker hue, featuring Led Bib, Toby Litt, and Cathi Unsworth, at Toynbee Studio Arts on Friday, March 12.
At the Courtyard Theatre, Hoxton, on Monday, March 15, join Stuart Silver on a journey to K2, in You Look Like Ants.
Printmaking, music, film and art is on the cards in Keep Printing and Carry On, Saturday, March 20, an interactive event featuring performance, play, and creative fun at Stoke Newington International Airport, Leswin Place, Stoke Newington.
Poet Tim Turnbull offers a satirical survey of our new cultural landscape, at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club on Wednesday, March 24. He will be joined by Laura Dockrill, Luke Kennard, and Francesca Millican-Slater.
Stoke Newington International Airport presents a mix of music and spoken word on Sunday, March 28. Musicians Leafcutter John, MacGillivray will join writers Hannah Silva and Peter Finch.
The Art of Storytelling, on Wednesday, March 31, sees a group of award-winning yarn-spinners tell tales with the help of puppets, cartoons, gift tags from the audience and a live printing press. It features Terry Saunders, Matthew Robins and Ian McMillan.
