TESCO has been refused planning permission to build a store in Highams Park.

The supermarket giant wanted to build the new supermarket on an industrial estate near Larkshall Road but these plans were rejected by Communities and Local Government Secretary of State Ruth Kelly and the planning inspector of a recent public inquiry.

Ms Kelly and the inspector argued the store would be out of keeping with the Victorian or Edwardian buildings in Highams Park and the proposed store would be too big.

Roger Torode, chair of the Highams Park Forum, who opposed the store, said: "This is a great victory for the local community."

A Tesco spokesman said the store would have provided major benefits to the local area.
