Spurs youngster tipped for big things by Wales coach

TOTTENHAM defender Chris Gunter has been tipped as a defensive pillar of the future by Wales U21 coach Brian Flynn.

Gunter, 18, did an excellent job of marshalling England's lively front pairing of Gabriel Agbonlahor and Theo Walcott in last night's 2-0 friendly defeat and Flynn sees the youngster as a top centre-half, despite being played a full-back for the Welsh national side and Spurs in the past.

"Long-term we see Chris as a centre-half. Short-term he will be a left or right-back, but since he was 17 his progress as far as I'm concerned has been as a centre-half in my eyes," said Flynn.

"He will play full-back for a while probably for club and country, but as he grows up and develops he will become our centre-half.

"Obviously (national manager) John Toshack will use him as a full-back for now, but he has all the skills to become a great centre-back."
