HIGHAMS PARK: Train death man identity revealed
THE identity of a man who died after being hit by a train near Highams Park has been revealed.
Simon Sheppard,35, of Walthamstow, was struck by a train between Highams Park and Wood Street stations during the early hours of Friday morning.
Three floral tributes have been left beside the level crossing barriers at Highams Park Station on Monday.
One tribute reads: "My dearest cousin Simon. You will be truely missed by us all. All our love in the world. Jason, Natasha and family."
Robert Semple, 40, knew Mr Sheppard when he was a young boy.
He said: "I was shocked when I heard Simon had died.
"A friend of mine called me about it.I knew Simon's sister Brenda when they lived in Montague Road in Leytonstone.
"He was a normal teenager. He did the usual sorts of things with his mates.
"He went to Tom Hood School which was pretty close to where he lived at the time."
A British Transport Police (BTP) spokeswoman said: "The driver was travelling at 50 mph and was going round a bend just after Highams Park station when he noticed a man lying on the track.
"He applied the emergency break but was not able to stop and struck him."
An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
BTP were called at 4.50am and are treating the incident as non-suspicious.
National Express East Anglia run services between Chingford and Liverpool Street.
A spokeswoman said: "The 4.28 service from Chingford to Liverpool Street hit a man. It was re-routed to a depot in Ilford after the incident."
She added the lines in both directions were closed at 4.45am and were reopened at 6.24am.
The BTP is urging anyone with information to call them on 0800 40 50 40.
Did you know Mr Sheppard? If so, leave a tribute to him in the comments box below or contact the newsdesk on 020 8498 3478 or by emailing jmoyes@london.newsquest.co.uk.

So sad to hear about Simon,I knew Simon from Tom Hood school and Pastures youth centre, we were about 11/12 years old back then just old enough to sneek into seniors club!! He used to like to DJ back then, I remember he like Soul 2 Soul & Jazzy B. We've lost many good people since the days of pastures & although I hadn't seen Simon for years, I never thought he'd be one of them. Your up in Heaven back with your old friends, hope your all partying like you used to. Rest in peace, sorry your gone, you were a nice guy. Love to your family.

My thoughts go out to simons family especially his mum and dad and his daughter dannielle. I used to be a close family friend, like a sister to dannielle and therefore spent alot of time round their house. Throughout my time i got to know the family very well and formed a close relationship with simon, he treated me like his own daughter and we spoke alot. When i foind out the news i was so shocked, i can not believe this could happen to such a lovely man. My deepest thoughts and best wishes go out to all his family as well as my deepest sympothy, i am so sorry for your loss. May you rest in peace Simon Shepperd, u deserved to have a longer life and were to young to die.

Simon we have cried many a tear in your memory but we have also laughed. Laughed at your silliness, laughed at your jokes and laughed at the good times that are far too many to recall individually. Your family can be proud that your are such a great guy and held in such high regard by everyone who knew you. Your memory will live on forever through your children and I hope they find some comfort in these dark days. xxx

My deepest condolences to all of Simon's family. I have known Simon for approx 30 years. We were in the same class from Nursery right through to College. He was like a brother to me. We hanged out together after school, weekends and almost every school holidays and did what kids do. After college, we went our seperate ways and lost contact with each other. I bumped into him about 5 years ago and it was just like old times times. That was the last time I saw him. Recently I made contact with some old mutual school friends through Friends United and we were trying to arrange a reunion with all the Old School Mates and Simon was on top of the list of friends to contact. I only found out about his death a day before his funeral and was fortunate enough to say pay my respects and say a final goodbye to one of my dearest and oldest friends. I can't believe that he is gone and that I will never see him again. Typical of Simon though, he managed to reunite all us old friends together after almost 20 years but under such sad circumstances.
Simon, I will miss you greatly. Rest In Peace Old Friend!

I was shocked and very sad to hear about the tragic accident in which Simon died. I went to school with him in Leytonstone, and always found him to be the kind, cheeky (not to mention 'cute' boy in our class. He was always polite to his elders as my mum said, but always up for a laugh. I hadn't seen him for years but will miss him, and always look back on our school days fondly. My thoughts are with his family and closest friends.

I havn't lived in London for over 14 years, but it's funny simon often comes into my thoughts. I remember playing pirates with him in pastures, walking over wanstead flats with him & a load of others in the middle of the night, going camping in Holland with him and pastures and mainly I will never be able to listen to L.L Cool J "I Need Love" without thinking of Simon mixing it on his decks on Montague Rd again & again. What a good memory!
