THIS morning's armed incident in Loughton when a shot was fired at a police car could be linked to the shooting of a man last night, it has emerged.

A man and a woman were arrested this morning following the 8am incident when the window of a police car was damaged.

Essex Police say the incident began when officers were contacted following what they describe as a "motoring complaint" on Pyrles Lane.

A spokesman said: "Officers stopped a car, but the window of the police vehicle was then broken after it was shot at."

The Guardian understands that a police sergeant was either in the police vehicle or had just got out when the shot was fired.

It is unclear how many shots were fired.

One eyewitness who spoke to the Guardian said he heard a single shot but the Metropolitan Police said it was alerted after "shots" were fired at an Essex Police car.

No police officer or member of the public was injured.

A suspect vehicle then drove off.

Armed Metropolitan Police officers, and the force helicopter, were alerted as the vehicle headed towards the Metropolitan Police area and a vehicle was eventually stopped in Rainham Road, in Hornchurch, at about 9.30am.

The male driver, aged 22, was Tasered by armed officers and arrested.

A woman who was also in the car was also arrested and both are currently being held in custody at an east London police station.

Police are investigating a possible link with the shooting of a man who went to the accident and emergency department at Queens Hospital, in Romford, last night with shotgun injuries. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Detectives from Trident and Essex Police are investigating and enquiries into the full circumstances of the incident continue.

A stretch of Pyrles Lane from the Burney Drive junction - including the parade of shops - remained cordoned off this morning as police took details from passers-by, some of whom reported hearing the gunshot.

Joe Roberts, of Mead Close, in Loughton works at the Costcutters convenience store close to the scene which was within the police cordon.

Speaking at the scene, he told the Guardian: "I just heard the gunshot and saw the car driving off. It's a bit shocking really."

Another passer-by, Carol - who did not want to give her full name - said: "I think it's quite scary really. I've just moved out (of this road). It makes me glad that I've moved from here."

Were you in Pyrles Lane this morning? What did you see or hear? Did you take any pictures of the aftermath of the incident?

What I don't understand is that this happened to Essex Police in Essex, so why couldn't they catch the shooters themselves?

Why did they have to involve the Metropolitan Police? Are Essex Police really that useless?

I've gotta agree here, Essex Police are useless. They're only any good at issuing speeding tickets!

Having to get the Met involved, just goes to show they cannot handle real crime.

Worrying thing is, that this is the first such shooting in Loughton. Is this the first of things to come?

This happened on the Debden council estate, so not really in Loughton.

Actually, as in a previous debate on here. The Debden council estate is part of Loughton. The postal address is Loughton.

You can split hairs all you want Debden/Loughton but if this sort of person is around the town, then the next shooting could be anywhere, Debden Broadway, Loughton High Road!

Gun crime is like a cancer and once its in your town (doesn't matter what part of the town) it can lead the whole town to becoming one big danger zone.

Debden and Loughton - yobs and snobs.

Forget this Debden - Lougton BS, this shooting happened in the town of Loughton of which 'Debden' is part of.

I think all residents of the town of Loughton should be worried as this could be the start of serious crime in the town, which if so, will effect EVERYONE.

Thought my comment would get everyone going....brightened up an otherwise dull Friday morning.....ok, so Debden is the crap part of Loughton - glad we all now agree.

The Police are too busy at Employment Tribunals suing the pants off each other and crying because they never got promoted to the next rank or in useless meetings.

What a load of rubbish. try reading the article. you might find they were arrested in the MET POLICE area. Personally I think it's dreadful and well done to the officers concerned, the police do a difficult job most of the people so vocal on this forum would be frightened to do!

Yes Essex Police do a most difficult, they let the criminals go in to a Met controled area and let the Met deal with it.

What bloody good are Essex Police? All they do is issue tickets and set-up speed checks. And when real crime like this happens, they let another police force deal with it.

I just love the fact that Loughton is becoming a ghetto and no one seems to care, all they can do is complain about Essex Police.

Why complain about Essex Police? They've always been more interested in the motorist than real crime.

"I think all residents of the town of Loughton should be worried as this could be the start of serious crime in the town, which if so, will effect EVERYONE."

What proof is there that the criminals were from Loughton or just passing through. If the latter, then you can hardly cast Loughton as inherently dangerous. The shooting could have happened in Buckhurst Hill or Theydon Bois - would they have been described as ghettoes if this was the case?

Pyrles Lane is not part of the Debden estate, it is on the outskirts.

The fact is that the policeman who was shot while chasing the gunman was from Essex Police. You can hardly claim he lacked bravery or dedication. I'd like people to bear in mind that the policeman was on the front-line and was shot trying to defend our security. We should praise him, not condemn the entire police force.

"Pyrles Lane is not part of the Debden estate, it is on the outskirts" - no it is! Do you even know Loughton?

This has to be the first shooting in Loughton/Debden in at lest 10 years and is the first ever 'black on black' shooting in the Town.

"Pyrles Lane is not part of the Debden estate, it is on the outskirts" - no it is! Do you even know Loughton?"

More than you, perhaps. The Debden estate was built by the GLC. There is no GLC-built accommodation on Pyrles Lane. The council flats on the road were built by the borough council before the Debden estate was built.

"This has to be the first shooting in Loughton/Debden in at lest 10 years and is the first ever 'black on black' shooting in the Town."

As there has been no description of the race of the man charged with the shooting or the policeman who was shot, how can you conclude it was a "black on black" shooting? The colour of the man and the victim are irrelevant, unless you have a racial agenda.

I would like to praise the bravery of the police officer who put himself in the line of fire and risked his life for our security. The police face the possibility of such dangers every day and we as a community should respect their courage.

Mick, New Zealand says...

Just to correct a couple of things, Debden was not built by the GLC, but by the London County Council starting in about 1948 and they certainly built the shops and quite a few houses in Pyrles Lane. I think the local Council built the flats on the opposite side of the road to the shops at a later date.
