WORRIED traders claim their livelihoods are at risk thanks to 'senseless' new parking restrictions outside their shops.

Double yellow lines and no loading' signs have been introduced on the west side of Wanstead High Street - and now businesses have joined disabled groups in slamming the council.

Londis convenience store manager, Nish Pau, told the Guardian he feared for the future of his business after the new lines forced countless customers and a delivery firm, to go elsewhere.

He explained: "Nobody is going to pull up outside my shop and run in to buy an ice cream or a pack of cigarettes now.

"I've already had a supplier who has refused to turn up again because of lack of parking.

"It is affecting us as members of the public are driving up the side alley next to the shop looking for somewhere to park, which blocks us in and can cause road rage."

As reported in the Guardian last week, the move has left legitimate blue badge holders unable to access crucial amenities in the area as the only disabled bays are located in the Snaresbrook end of the High Street.

Nice Croissant manager, Kerry Dainty has a loading bay outside her shop.

She said: "I do think there should be more loading bays available as it's absolutely crucial.

"It must be hard for all businesses, especially in the current economic circumstances, as it makes it a little bit more difficult."

Snaresbrook ward councillor Sue Nolan said the new restrictions were introduced following a long period of consideration.

She added: "The reason why double yellow lines were introduced was because of the terrible congestion in the High Street.

"Shopkeepers, Transport for London, the police and the public have all called for this and people can still park on the other side, without pay-and-display charges, which is better than in many other shopping areas.

"I understand their concerns but hopefully delivery drivers will learn to work around this and arrive early in the morning, or late at night."

A council spokesman said: "The recently revised parking and loading restrictions were implemented to address the congestion and road safety conditions in the High Street, this followed a number of complaints and discussions at area committee.

"Traffic management orders were advertised in the local press and on site, in accordance with the statutory requirements. No objections were received so the order was made and the restrictions implemented."

If the yellow lines are justified to ease traffic congestion then why has Redbridge Council done work in both Barkingside and Ilford designed to increase congestion? Is it all part of their "strangle the motorist" policy?

the amount of money wasted on barkingside, moving traffic lights ten feet, parking bays, pavements etc.

maybe if they looked at the 10 or so empty shops they'd realise whats actually happening own there.

take away the charity shops and what exactly have you got left

I agree with Cllr Nolan. You have to strike a balance between the interests of shopkeepers and members of the public trying to drive safely on the High Street. I've witneesed serious congestion on numerous occasions with bus drivers having to try and do the impossible.

Not sure how often Morris Hickey drives down Wanstead High Street. But that's another story.

Often enough to recognise that something had to be done. My main point (inadequately expressed, perhaps) is that the objective in Wanstead was twofold - (a) to ease the congestion, and (b) to facilitate free parking on one side. Just contrast this with Barkingside where gridlock has been deliberately created that was not previously there, and parking now takes place at wholly inappropriate locations for which a charge is made. The council's last budget also identified a number of other places to impose pay & display even though there is not a parking problem.

Glad for Wanstead High Street - now let's have some sense applied to Barkingside and to Ilford Town Centre. In the latter case a scheme is being imposed that has every prospect of creating a permanent traffic nightmare.

GIVE THE STREETS BACK TO THE PEOPLE!

No doubt soon that Redbridge Council will be repeating the ghastly tactic used by the likes of Newham and Waltham Forest - that is to point a CCTV camera at anyone daring to make a vital stop outside the doctors' surgery. Then of course the innocent Joseph Bloggs gets hammered with a fine while all the true scumbags can safely carry on spitting, thieving and attacking the local pensioners.

As a Wanstead resident, I walk to, and use, my local shops regularly. I use my car to leave Wanstead and am absolutely delighted with the effect the double lines have had. At long last we can actually drive along the High St without fear of knocking over some poor pedestrian peering through parked cars, trying to cross the road. There is loads of single yellow line parking to be had in Wanstead Place / Grovsnor Road area and perhaps if the motorists were a little less lazy they could investigate these side roads and realise that there is actually local free parking beyond the High St! I just hope the lines remain.
