HAMMERS TALK: Baggies line up Collins

1:04pm Tuesday 8th July 2008

WEST Ham defender James Collins is at the centre of transfer speculation linking him with a move to Premier League new boys West Brom.

The 24-year-old missed most of last term through injury - the latter half with a cruciate knee problem - and is struggling to be fit for the start of the new season.

But that hasn't stopped Baggies boss Tony Mowbray seeking to take the Welsh international on loan.

Mowbray is desperate to strengthen his defence in a bid to increase their chances of survival in the top flight.

Hammers boss Alan Curbishley is set for talks with Collins to resolve the player's future at the club, and the east Londoners may be reluctant to release a player who plays in a position that has been ravaged by injuries.

With the future of Anton Ferdinand also in doubt, the prospect of Mowbray capturing his man is looking slim - but if the opportunity arises, the West Brom manager is ready to strike.

Collins has made 33 appearances for the Irons following his 2005 switch from Cardiff City.
