ANGRY parents have slammed Epping Forest College as being "too secretive" after they were not alerted to a Tuberculosis scare for almost two months.

The parents of a student, who do not wish to be identified, received a letter dated July 2 from staff informing them of the cases, in May.

The Loughton mother said they had received "next to no information" about the outbreak and criticised the college for telling them on the last day of term.

She said: "They've told us he (her son) will receive free chest screening, but we have heard nothing since."

She added: "This is a public health issue, they could be sending infected children home to spend the holidays with their parents, we really feel very let down by the whole situation."

Tuberculosis can be spread by coughing or sneezing and while the number of cases in Britain has dropped dramatically since the 1950s, if left untreated it can prove to be fatal.

The college's health and welfare advisor, Sallyann Harries, confirmed there had been two separate cases of Tuberculosis at the Borders Lane site, but denied students could transmit the disease.

She said: "It's an isolated incident. We've been working with the Health Protection Agency as soon as we became aware of these cases. Any students that have been identified as having close contact with the infected students will be offered a screening test at the local hospital."

Sh added the two students were removed from the college immediately and there was no need to tell parents because "at that point there was nothing to inform them of at that point."

In a letter to parents, she said: "TB is generally not very infectious and is not easily transmittable, a prolonged period of exposure with an infected person is required for any risk of transmission to occur."

The father, who also did not want to be named, said: "It's very concerning that the college didn't bother to tell us anything about this until the last possible minute, especially when you consider one of the infected pupils is in my son's class."

A Health Protection Agency spokesman said the college had raised the alarm as soon as students exhibited signs.

"The Health Protection Agency's Essex Health Protection Unit has been working with West Essex Primary Care Trust and staff from Epping Forest College to identify the close contacts of two patients with TB. These patients are no longer infectious. These are isolated cases and this is not an outbreak, although the risk of catching the disease is low."

The parent criticised the delay, saying: "TB still kills people around the world everyday, I really think we have a right to know if our children are at risk as soon as possible."

TB was eradicated in this Country years ago. Dare I assume this, that the two cases originated from non-British citizens.

No real surprise as must local kids go to Harlow College.

Gene, my childrens' school in Redbridge had a TB case about 2 years ago. This was a white British child. He'd caught it on holiday abroad previously. This is becoming more and more common - WHY are our children no long being vaccinated? I've spoken to both Redbridge and Epping Forest health authorities and get nowhere. According to them we're not "high risk". However, there are more and more cases being reported. The vaccination should be brought back.

Lots of information about TB can be found on the Charity TB Alert's website: www.tbalert.co.uk/ge
neral/faq.php

Newspapers seem to imply that TB in the UK is all due to immigrants- TB Alert says this is not the case.

About half of all TB in Britain occurs in British people born in the UK. Although anyone can get TB, a person’s natural immunity to disease suffers from living stressful lifestyles, in poor conditions or on poor diets, so immigrants or refugees in those situations are more vulnerable to the disease.

TB is a bug! It doesn't discriminate as to who it affects! We should all be aware of the signs and symptoms so that we can stop the spread- whoever has the disease and wherever they come from !

Gene- TB has never been eradicated!

TB Alert says the (misguided) belief that TB has been eradicated has led to cases of TB being missed or misdiagnosed – with serious consequences for the individual, and the people they pass the disease on to. One man didn’t go to the doctor despite having a cough for over two years – he thought as a smoker he would just be told off and told to give up. He died when the TB causing the cough spread to his brain.

Awareness is good- blame does nothing to help matters!

Debden is a ghetto, you get diseases like TB in ghettos, next they'll have reports of rickets.

All the students are either from the Debden ghetto or East London ghetto, so cut them some slack!

I am old enough to remember screening for TB and it was never a problem in this Country until 'new' Labour opened this Country's borders to one and all.

Not trying to push an agenda, just telling the truth. The paper is right to come from the angle that mass immigration in to this Country has caused large cases of TB.

Another example is rabies which the UK was free from until the Government's 'open door policy'.

Yes, there were no diseases in the UK in the 'good old days' of Dickens or in the 1920's...etc.

Don’t be so flippant, since the UK has been a ‘soft touch’ on immigration may disease s that either were once eradicated or nearly eradicated have come back with large numbers of cases, TB & rabies being the most prominent.

People are quick to blame the college and immigrants for the TB cases. Mass immigration has been occurring since the 1950s, but TB has only started to rise as a result of a decline in BCG vaccinations. Government cut-backs are to blame.

Totally agree with you Raj - which is why the BCG should be reintroduced immediately into schools.

It is a British custom to binge drink, have fights and vomit over the pavement at weekends. It is a British custom to let your dog and cat foul pavements and others' gardens. Don't you think these things spread disease? White people are not intrinsically cleaner than any other people.

Er....its not a "British custom" only a minority. So please leave your anti-British angenda at home. Thaks.

"White people are not intrinsically cleaner than any other people." - Where the hell did this come from? No one on this page has mentioned white, black etc. only persons from foreign Countrys of which the people are many different colours inculding white. Why does this site attract so many racist?

"its not a "British custom" only a minority. So please leave your anti-British angenda at home."

Hey, you know what, it is only a very small minority of immigrants who spit on the road and spread TB? If people do not like stereotypes of British, then they should not stereotype the behaviour of immigrants. The fact is that Britain has seen around 60 years of mass immigration from the West Indies, Africa and Asia. Only now the TB rate is increasing. The change has not been related to immigration but is concurrent with the decline in BCG vaccinations. Please stop blaming immigrants for every little thing that goes wrong in this country and this town. Sometimes the problems are self-inflicted.

Paul, Walthamstow says...

Some people like simplistic reasoning and finding easy scapegoats to blame...lazy thinking! Never mind the facts; blame the immigrants! Education is a wonderful thing, but in these dumbed-down times and rags like like the Sun, Express and the Mail selling millions, what do you expect?

Resident, says...

This is degenerating into a racial thing and should not. The problem here is that the college did not make this widely known and students and parents should have been informed a lot earlier. It makes the worry all the more as it was only announced at the end of term.

So how comes 'Raj' you can make racist comments like above.

But I cannot say, it is an Indian custom to smell like curry powder?

I was reflecting on the xenophobic comments above, which claimed that TB was the fault of immigration. There is the assumption that foreigners spread disease. I don't think these are British customs any more than it is a custom of foreigners to spit (many British also spit on the road, by the way). If you want to engage in prejudiced generalisations of foreigners on the basis of the behaviour of a small minority then expect the same back. If people want to go around saying Indians smell of curry powder because they eat spiced food, then don't complain if Indians say British smell of dogs because they keep these animals in their homes.

For true stupidity how about the fact that babies born at Whippsx to people who live in LBWD automatically get given the TB jab but babies born at Whippsx to people who live in Epping Forest have to get their health visitor to write to the GP who then sends them to Harlow to get the exact same thing done.

Because after all - no one in Loughton ever goes into London, or meets anyone from London, or travels by tube etc etc.

Oh - and unfortunately this site always attracts loads of racists - particularly when the college comes up. It is depressing.

Raj from Loughton LOL what a joke next you'll be calling yourself British.

Raj, Loughton says...

Kate: I know that many British feel ashamed whenever a BNP candidate wins a council seat, including most of Loughton's good community. But if you wish to go on blaming foreigners for all the wrongs in this predominantly white community, then you'll never find solutions to your problems - solutions that are plainly obvious, eg BCG vaccinations to prevent TB as opposed to expelling non-white people (as if TB never existed before immigration!).
