Volunteers at Connaught Waters, Chingford

Improvements at lake completed

First published in News by

IMPROVEMENTS at a lake have been completed after months of hard work by volunteers.

People gave up their time to construct two angling platforms and a boardwalk at Connaught Waters in Rangers Road, Chingford.

Plants have also been placed in the lake to improve the habitat and protected with temporary fencing from birds and dogs until they are established.

Volunteer Development Officer, Martin Whitfield, said: "Those involved worked incredibly hard and they should feel very proud of themselves for what they have managed to achieve in such a short time."

Other improvements, which were financed through the Heritage Lottery Fund, also included more seating and resurfacing of a carpark.

All well and good (and taking nothing away from the great work of the volunteers) but Connaught Waters is blighted by disgusting dog owners who allow their pets to foul the paths. I used to take my children for walks around the lake but have given up going there as it was just a horrible obstacle course. What is needed is wardens regularly handing out fines as they do so vigilantly in Hackney. Waltham Forest is full of dog mess and the council needs to address that more seriously than they currently doo doo

It would be nice if the area around the boating lake at Hollow Ponds could be sorted out, I had thought it might have been done for the olympics, but there you go.

I cycle past it on my commute sometimes, it looks like they are doing some work, hopefully for the better.
maybe someone can clarify this?

I am a dog owner and i agree all dog owners should clean up after there dogs. It's the law anyway! I am unsure if there are "toilet bins" provided in CW, if not then there should be.
More of an issue though is people who allow there dogs off the lead and have no control of them. It is a particular issue at CW and I have heard numerous stories (and seen many injuries) sustained by both dogs and people because some irresponsible dog owners cant control there pets. The area should have mandatory dogs on a lead rules and "toilet bins".

There were also plans to slightly redesign the roundabout at the top of Whipps Cross Rd so walkers would cross onto the island but these seem to have been delayed ? as they obviously haven't appeared with the Olympics.
