AMONG the millions of people marking Remembrance Sunday was a group of students from Woodford Green who travelled to the battlefields of the First World War.
Sixty students from Bancroft’s School in the High Road went to Ypres and the Somme where they saw the grave of Bancroft’s old boy John Outram, who was killed at just 22 in November 1917.
They also visited the Menin Gate at Ypres, where 55,000 names are inscribed, and the British cemetery at Tyne Cot, close to Paschendale where almost 12,000 men are buried.
Year 10 student, Katie Rogers, said: “This weekend has really brought home the horrendous conditions these men suffered in the trenches.
“It was particularly shocking to see just how many of these brave soldiers have no graves and how many unmarked graves there are.”
