A SCHOOLGIRL who suffered serious head injuries after being hit by a car is no longer in a critical condition and is recovering, police say.

The 11-year-old, thought to be a pupil of Lammas School, was run over by a silver BMW 316 in Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, last Tuesday afternoon (November 20).

She was rushed to the major trauma unit of the Royal London Hospital and had been fighting for her life.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of careless driving. He has been released on bail until mid-February.

The crash happened close to the end of the school day just after 3pm near the junctions with Hitcham Road and Seymour Road.

A Met spokesman said the driver stopped at the scene.

Lea Bridge Road is the most dangerous in the borough, according to Waltham Forest Council.

In a 2011 report it said that in a 36-month period up to March 2009 a total of 80 people were injured on the highway - the highest rate in the borough

A study by the Department of Transport, also published last year, confirmed this and stated that ten people had been killed on Lea Bridge Road since 1999.
