LEYTON Orient Football Club and the University of East London (UEL) have teamed up to form a new partnership.

Under the agreement, the club will offer internships and coaching secondments to students, while the university will share its sport science expertise with the football team's academy.

UEL has already been offering services such as physiological testing support to the club over the past three years.

Dr Nick Bourne, senior lecturer at UEL’s School of Health, Sport and Bioscience, said: “As one of our local clubs, we are delighted to be involved in this new partnership, which covers key areas of support including strength and conditioning, match analysis and fitness testing.

"It is great to finally ratify our relationship".

Leyton Orient's Fitness and Conditioning coach Lee Southernwood said: “We are delighted to link up with UEL, as we continue to develop the sports science support provided to all players at the club.

"The internships on offer will allow UEL students to gain vital experience, whilst providing the club with additional resources to provide more comprehensive support and analysis to the players and coaching staff.

"The partnership will also allow the club to maintain pace with emerging trends in sport and exercise medicine, through access to the latest information and research.”
