MEMBERS of two town organisations have come together to plant a tree in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Thirty guests from the Buckhurst Hill Horticultural Society and Women's Institute gathered at Roding Valley recreation ground on Friday November 23 to witness the planting of a Sorbus Sheerwater seedling.

The two societies' oldest members, Fred Skerry and Stella Morris, did the honours by adding the first soil to the base of the tree.

Society chairman Maureen Briggs said the groups had decided to collaborate after realising both had come up with the same idea.

She said: "It's a native tree that's interesting in spring because it's got white flowers, and then in autumn the leaves and the berries colour up.

"We had 30 people turn out, which I was very pleased about."
