The electoral ward Wanstead rises by just 21 people in ten years

WANSTEAD'S population has grown by just 21 people over the last ten years, according to latest figures.

The 2011 census shows that in the six wards covering the west of Redbridge, Wanstead has experienced the smallest increase in population since 2001, with a 0.2% rise.

Church End ward has experienced the largest increase, with a rise of 15.2 per cent from 9,993 to 11,516.

Cllr Richard Hoskins said there has been significant development in the ward, compared to Wanstead which is a conservation area, with around a fifth of properties built in the last 10 years.

He said: "The upside is that it has made George Lane a very popular shopping area, but the downside is the pressure it puts on local services."

The ward in Redbridge which has seen the largest increase in population is Clementswood, which covers Ilford town centre.

The population has increased from 11,294 people in 2010 to 14,257 in 2011, which is an increase of 30 per cent.

Redbridge as a whole has seen a rise of 17 per cent, compared to 18 per cent in neighbouring Waltham Forest and 14 per cent across London.

There are certainly more people sleeping in doorways and begging by the cash tills.

Does that figure include the Big Issue seller who stands outside the Co-op? She was there when I moved to Wanstead in 2000 (it was Somerfield in those days). I can't believe she's been 'homeless' for 12 years!

In Wanstead? I live here and I've never seen that. You know, Cornbeefur, this site is read by more than just locals; people around the world find their way to these articles and comment sections. Please be more responsible about the warped and nasty impressions you're putting out there.

LakeBreeze i agree with you here,
Cornbeefur puts all areas down, it puts people off buying, his comments should be stopped.

Thank you SHX; yes, it puts people off buying, shopping in an area, all kinds of reasons to visit which in themselves raise the area anyway.

For someone to disseminate -- on the world wide web -- extremely negative and untrue remarks can itself help to begin to create the downward spiral depicted in those very remarks.

I've seen comments here from people in the USA and other countries -- Cornbeefur is not only telling horror stories to near-locals and nationals, but even thsoe around the world. They won't always have the experience with him to realise that he's not to be given credence.

There is a large recessed doorway next to Santander Bank opposite the George where I have seen at least 3 different people sleeping there whilst i wait a the Traffic Lights.

I have seen the same people using the Toilet facilities in Starbucks at 7am carrying their worldly possessions with them in numerous suitcases and bags, who are obviously living a vagrant lifestyle.

When I have stopped to withdraw money from the bank halfway down the High Street, I have often seen different beggers wrapped in a quilt or blanket, sometimes with a dog, perched down by the cash till asking for money.

You can choose to ignore these things but what is the point? This is the reality unfortunately.
