A STREET has not be swept in six weeks - despite a council pledge to clean it  every few days, it has been claimed.

Brian Reeves, 62, of Barclay Road in Walthamstow, said he had contacted the council five times in less than a week but the "disgusting" mess had still not been cleared.

He said: "It's not just the rubbish, it's the way they've treated me which makes me angry.

"I keep contacting them about it but never call back. When I do get through they fob me off.

"They claim the street is swept twice a week at 6am. But I get up at 5am so I know that's not correct.

"It's like a McDonald's car park. There's litter everywhere and the leaves were ankle-deep at one point until they got dispersed by the wind. It's absolutely filthy.

"All I want is for my street to be cleaned on a regular basis like [council contractors] Kier are supposed to."

A council spokesman denied the claims.

He said: "Barclay Road is cleaned every Wednesday.

"A council officer inspected the road following Mr Reeves’ complaint and judged it to be cleaned adequately and knocked at Mr Reeves’ door to discuss the matter.

"Unfortunately he was not in at the time and perhaps similarly has not been in at the times over the past six weeks when his road was cleaned.

“Needless to say, the council will continue to monitor the situation and will hold our contractors to account if any roads are found to not have been cleaned to a suitable standard.

"At this moment in time Barclay Road would not fall into that category.”
