A FAMILY walked away with £500 worth of shopping after taking part in a fund-raising 'Supermarket Sweep' style trolley dash in Highams Park Tesco.

The Hankey family, of north Chingford, were given three minutes of helping themselves to the store's shelves after winning a raffle in aid of the KNI Foundation.

Mum-of-two Caroline Hankey nominated her son James, 19, to do the dash on her behalf.

She said: "I didn't expect to win but it was so much fun.

"As the site is so big we decided to focus on getting Christmas presents for everyone.

"My son got himself a new TV, we got quite a lot of drink for Christmas, gift cards and things like that. It was fantastic."

She added: "We've been very interested in the KNI Foundation's work helping children, particularly with bereavement, and the work they do is really important."

The Walthamstow-based charity was founded by Dean Ibrahim in memory of his brother Kenny, a popular Chingford man who tragically died in a crash in Thailand in 2009.

Mr Ibrahim said: "This was a fantastic event. We have made one family’s Christmas and also managed to raise £1,700 for our bereavement project.

"The money will go directly to helping children and young people in Waltham Forest who have lost a parent, sibling or close relative.

"Bereavement affects us all in a different ways and it is important for us to provide children with a place they can express themselves, make friends and not become isolated or excluded because of their experiences".

He added: "I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who bought a ticket and took part in the raffle, as well as our volunteers and, of course, Tesco Highams Park for supporting the fund-raiser and allowing us to do it”.

Two runners-up won Tesco vouchers. The event took place on Sunday December 16.
