SINGING sewer workers have used 'Gangnam Style' to kick up a stink about fat being disposed of in sinks.

The four, including Eton Manor Rugby Club player Dave Dennis, are responsible for keeping London's sewers clear of blockages.

But Christmas is a particularly bad time for what is known in the trade as 'fatbergs'.

These are formed when households do not responsibly dispose of cooking oils and fats which make their way into the sewer system and solidify.

Last year Thames Water dealt with 101 blockages on Christmas Day alone.

To raise awareness of the problem, Mr Deniis and his collleagues changed the lyrics to Psy's international hit and recorded a video for Youtube.

The 37-year-old, who is a prop for the Wanstead based rugby club's first team, said: "We usually do carols to promote the campaign, but we thought why not do something different this year.

"The fat builds up with other waste in bigger and bigger lumps called 'fatbergs', sticking the walls and blocking the pipes, which could make your toilet flood. It is pretty disgusting.

"What I usually do is put a piece of kitchen paper in a glass and pour the fat in there - the paper then absorbs the fat and it can be put in the bin.

"It was great fun to make, but a little embarrassing with people watching us on the street."

And Mr Dennis said it is the fat, rather than the raw sewage, which makes his job sometimes particularly unpleasant.

He added: "The sewers themselves don’t really smell, it’s the build up of fat which does.

After a day of walking around in it you can get home and have a shower, but the smell won’t leave you. The fat stinks."
