THE BANK of England has launched a £1bn tender for the future production of its banknotes - but says the jobs of the 200 staff at its Debden printing works are safe.

Current supplier De La Rue risks losing its contract after the Bank asked bidders to apply to take over production from 2015 until 2025.

Banknotes will continue to be printed on machinery at the works in Langston Road, Debden, and the Bank said it expected staff to be transferred from De La Rue to the winning bidder.

The new supplier will oversee the printing of more than 12bn banknotes and will be expected to manage all aspects of production, including the maintenance and refurbishment of machinery.
