A BUSINESSMAN has applied to open a new off licence but there are concerns the shop could attract trouble-makers and criminals.

Mihail-Eduard Andrei wants to sell booze from the shop, at 245 Hoe Street by its junction with Third Avenue in Walthamstow, between 10am and 8pm seven days a week.

But a man claiming to be a spokesperson for businesses in the area has objected due to concerns it will lead to an escalation of crime and disorder in the area.

He said there was already a problem with drug addicts and drunks in the area, and a new shop would make such problems worse, according to council documents.

Mr Andrei initially wanted a licence to stay open until 11pm but was persuaded to change his application when police said they would not object if the proposed hours were reduced.

Councillors on Waltham Forest Council's licensing sub-committee panel will decide on the application during a meeting on Tuesday January 8.
