Planning permission is being sought for a commemorative sculpture dedicated to pilots who fought in both world wars.

Redbridge Vision, which manages Fairlop Waters in Forest Road, Barkingside, has applied for permission for the artwork on the site which was used as an airfield during two world wars.

The application has support from the Fairlop Heritage Group, Lord Carrington, who has links to Hainault Forest Country Park, Second World War veteran Kenneth Trott, who flew from the airfield in 1943, and Ilford North MP Lee Scott.

Mr Trott, who now lives in Bournemouth, said in a letter of support: "As a young man I joined the RAF in 1941 and flew with 195 Squadron at Fairlop from September 1943 to February 1944.

"It seems only right that some form of memorial shall be placed at Fairlop to commemorate those war years, and the part that was played by so many to bring us eventual victory."

The proposed sculpture will be approximately 4.5 metres tall and made of steel with a stone top.

If planning permission is accepted it will be situated on a slight mound near the car park.

David Martin, chairman of the Fairlop Heritage Group, said in his letter of support that the artwork will be used for commemorative services.

He added: "It will both motivate and inspire children who are the next keepers of the heritage of Fairlop."

Comments on the application are being accepted until January 24.
