A community group formed to challenge some of Britain's most notorious gangsters has continued to its hard work to preserve a beloved neighbourhood.

The Woodford Green Amenity Group started in 1974 when criminal associates of the jailed Kray Twins hatched a plan at their County Hotel base in Oak Hill to demolish many of the area's distinctive, historical buildings to make way for new developments.

The gangsters never got their way, but the group flourished and has gone from strength to strength.

Its 1100 dedicated members give up their spare time to keep clean areas it feels are neglected by local authorities.

The group, which has the motto 'Keep Woodford Green', undertakes duties including regular litter sweeps and clearing weeds from ponds, as well as raising money for visual improvements such as street flowers.

It also monitors planning issues and works to preserve the area's historical assets and conservation status.

Committee member Peter French, 86, of Linden Crescent, said: "It is a feel-good thing to be a part of the group.

"It is good socially and it is giving something back to the community.

"When we litter pick we wear our own tabards with the horse chestnut logo on, which looks similar to the council’s logo and because of that people ask us about council issues – it always raises a wry smile among members.

"Then there’s the people who know the truth and thank us for our work."

Retired police officer Geoff Stimpson, 79, of Beresford Drive, is set to mark his 20th year as chairman of the group.

And he is proud of the group's origins and continued determination to make a difference and improve lives.

He said: ""We used to illegally close the road early on a Sunday morning and string Christmas lights across the road.

"We did it until the council got on to us about health and safety, and then we had to leave it to the local authority and it hasn’t been the same since."

"It takes a lot of organising to do the things we do, but I have enjoyed being part of a group that does so much for the community.

"But we do need some younger blood to help out with membership drives and fundraising."
