Advice for making sure your car is ready for the snow has been given by police.

They advise that motorists should make sure their anti-freeze is topped up, wiper blades are working properly and tyres and tyre pressures are checked.

They also advise that on long journeys having a blanket in the car in the car is a good idea in case of break down and a carrying a shovel after a heavy snowfall.

Chief Inspector Justin Smith said: "Hopefully the weather won’t be too bad this week but the advice is still to make sure your vehicle is winter ready, give it a once over check and that you have plenty of fuel.

"Remember that the roads can be very icy and you need to drive cautiously, reducing your speed and allowing extra time to break.”
