People tired of flytipping and litter spoiling a river have launched a campaign to clear it up.

Residents and councillors are angry at people using the River Ching as a dumping ground.

They say stretch of river and footpath between Beech Hall Road and Winchester Road in Highams Park is often covered with rubbish.

And the area between Hale End Road and Winchester Road is also said to be used as a flytipping site for household items.

Hale End and Highams Park councillor Darshan Sunger said residents had now had enough.

They have welcomed new bins along the riverside, but are calling for more to be done.

Cllr Sunger said: "It’s got disgusting with people throwing rubbish into it and flytipping all along the river. We want to do something about it and the bins are just the start.

"We’re going to organise a big clean up planned for April and we need as many people as possible.

"Also the new street cleaning contract should have a stipulation to make cleaning up the river’s edge a compulsory part of the contractor’s job."
